TAB Offering Two Pre-Election Webinars for Newsrooms

- Last Minute Election Coverage Challenges & Managing Journalist Stress

Since 2002, TAB has presented an annual newsroom seminar, the Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop, but due to COVID-19 conditions this year’s workshop isn’t taking place in-person on a Saturday in the fall.

Instead, TAB has presented informative and educational seminars online since this past summer. Sessions thus far have covered reporting and writing skills, as well as webinars on managing the newsroom during times of crisis.

TAB will close out October with two more timely newsroom offerings outlined below. There is no limit to the number of TAB member station employees who sign-up for these FREE sessions!

Journalism Stress and Trauma in COVID Times

Finally, some self-care for broadcast journalists!

Don’t neglect the impact the job of newsgathering is having on you.

This Oct. 27, 10 AM session features husband-wife team Al Tompkins of the Poynter Institute and Sidney Tompkins, a licensed psychotherapist, on the topic of coping with journalist stress and trauma.

The Tompkins each have 40-years-experience in their respective fields.

It’s not just COVID-19. The stress and trauma affecting today’s journalists comes from all corners and it is taking a heavy toll on newsroom staff.

This 90-minute online seminar will offer practical and common-sense solutions to help newsroom staff combat stress and trauma and improve their well-being.

Elections Essentials for Texas Journalists

Al Tompkins returns later in the week for a session on the last-minute challenges newsrooms face when covering the 2020 Election.

The 90-minute long session on Oct. 29 starts at 10:30 a.m. CT.

Tompkins will prep broadcast newsrooms on how to confront disinformation, potential court challenges, delayed vote counts in Texas (and nationally), and the confusion likely to occur both before, on and immediately following the Nov. 3 General Election.
