Pioneer Herschel Smith succumbs to illness

Texas Pioneer Club Member Herschel B. Smith died on Monday, Sept. 17 after a long illness. He was 77.

He was born in Houston on Aug. 12, 1930 to George Smith and Octavia Griffith.

After growing up in Baytown (Barbers Hills, Cedar Bayou), he obtained a communications advertising degree from the University of Texas at Austin and served in the Air Force.

Smith then worked in sales for various Texas stations including KZTV Corpus Christi (1957-62; 1966-68) and KRBC-TV Abilene (1962-65).

He retired from KASE/KVET Austin in 1997 after 32 years with the stations.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Mooney of Victoria; son, Bret Smith of Blue Ridge, GA.; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Eeds Funeral Home in Lockhart.
