FEMA posts IPAWS/EAS Test “explainer” webinar online

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) posted its recent webinar that explains IPAWS for the layman and which also provides background on this month’s upcoming regional IPAWS/ EAS test.

Station management, program directors and news personnel can view this 48-minute non-technical webinar here.

Texas is one of 22 states slated for the test, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 1:20 PM CT.

The test message will use the National Periodic Test (NPT) event code with an audio message that sounds very much like a typical Required Monthly Test text.

This test does NOT take the place of that week’s Required Weekly Test (RWT).

Participation in the test is completely voluntary and FEMA assures the test will be conducted in a no-risk environment.

The test is meant to see if systems are working at the station level, and if not, to uncover issues for station staff to correct.

FEMA has one more webinar scheduled specifically for station engineering staff.

These will provide more technical discussions of IPAWS, concluding with step-by-step EAS device configuration instructions for the various manufacturers’ units in the field.

This session is set for Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 9am CT.
