Consumer Emergency Preparedness Gets Boost with Sales Tax Holiday

- Key supplies tax-free this week-end, three more tax holidays to come

Texas lawmakers over the past several years have enacted four sales tax holidays that are perfect for station ad packages that bring retailers business and shoppers significant savings. The first is just around the corner and speaks to one of broadcasters’ key roles in serving communities – emergency preparedness.

Shoppers can purchase emergency preparation supplies tax free this week-end, April 28-30. The law limits the sales tax break to certain supplies and various price thresholds. While it’s too late to craft an ad package around this holiday, there’s still time to remind Texans of the need to plan for emergencies and the opportunity to save a bit of money.

Two other sales tax holidays are slated for Memorial Day weekend May 26-28. These events cover certain water-efficient and energy-efficient products. Eligible products vary, so be sure you, your advertisers and your audience understand the rules.

A fourth sales tax holiday is slated for Aug. 10-12, just in time for back-to-school season. The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced less than $100 from sales taxes.  Again, be sure you and your advertisers understand the fine print.
