Rep. Torres announces run for state comptroller

Former state Rep. Raul Torres, R-Corpus Christi, has made it official – he’s running for state comptroller.

Torres served one term in the Texas House and last ran for a Texas Senate seat in 2012, a race he lost.

He is a certified public accountant who wants the state to adopt the Lean Six Sigma management system to reduce wasteful spending and shrink government overall.

Current Comptroller Susan Combs announced recently that she will not seek re-election.

Other Republicans who have announced candidacies for the Comptroller’s post include state Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy; statewide Tea Party leader and 2010 gubernatorial candidate Debra Medina; and state Rep. Harvey Hilderbran, R-Kerrville, current chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Meanwhile, Houston businessman Mike Collier is the lone Democrat to announce a candidacy for the Comptroller’s office.
