Update: Analog Shut-Off Delay
posted on 2.05.2009As expected, the House passed legislation delaying the mandatory analog shut-off date from Feb. 17 to June 12.
The bill, S. 352, includes language that allows broadcasters to terminate analog transmissions before June 12 with FCC coordination and approval, thanks to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Hutchison worked closely with TAB to ensure broadcasters concerns were mitigated.
"Had it not been for Sen. Hutchison's leadership, it's very likely the delay would be mandatory, not voluntary," said TAB President Ann Arnold. "Texas broadcasters are fortunate to have her leadership and we are proud to have such a close working relationship with her."
The legislation is expected to be signed by President Obama as early as tomorrow, Feb. 5.
In the meantime, stations should consider suspending any analog soft shut-off tests referring to the Feb. 17 date until they determine when they will terminate analog operations.
TAB will advise stations about restructured DTV education efforts in the coming days.
