Texas House Committee Meeting Schedule Set, Check for Local Lawmakers
posted on 2.24.2025The House committee meeting schedule has been released for the committees of jurisdiction hearing the bulk of TAB’s legislative issues this session.
Now is a good time to review these three committees to see if you have a local lawmaker on them.
Broadcaster relationships with their local lawmakers are a key element to TAB’s legislative success.
Being able to weigh in on a bill with a local lawmaker can make all the difference to seeing it pass or stopping it dead in its tracks.
House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee
The House Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee will meet on Wednesdays at 8 am as will the House State Affairs Committee.
The JCJ committee, as it is commonly called at the Capitol, will be hearing the various anti-SLAPP litigation law measures that have been filed this session.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Jeff Leach, R-Plano, with Rep. Ann Johnson, D-Houston, serving as vice chair.

House State Affairs Committee
The House State Affairs Committee will hear most of the legislation affecting the Texas Public Information Act and the Texas Open Meetings Act, the two venerable Open Government laws utilized by newsrooms to report on policy decisions and how taxpayer dollars are spent.
Rep. Ken King, R-Canadian, is chairman of the committee.
The Vice Chair is Rep. Ana Hernandez, D-Houston.
Committee members include Reps. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas; Drew Darby, R-San Angelo; Yvonne Davis, D-Desoto; Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth; Ryan Guillen, R-Rio Grande City; Lacey Hull, R-Houston; John McQueeney, R-Fort Worth; Will Metcalf, R-Conroe; Dade Phelan, R-Nederland; Richard Raymond, D-Laredo; John Smithee, R- Amarillo; Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston; and Chris Turner, D-Dallas.
Both of these committees likely will go to a two meeting a week schedule as House bill hearings stretch into April.
House Calendars Committee
The House Calendars Committee does not have a set meeting schedule as the committee convenes at the call of the chair.
The committee is important as it serves as the gatekeeper in determining which bills will be placed on a floor agenda for discussion and vote.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Todd Hunter, R-Corpus Christi, a longtime friend of the cause of Open Government.
Rep. Toni Rose, D-Dallas serves as vice chair.
Other Committee members include Reps. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg; Stan Gerdes, R-Smithville; Cody Harris, R-Palestine; Ana Hernandez, D-Houston; Ann Johnson, D-Houston; Jeff Leach, R-Plano; Janie Lopez, R-San Benito; Ramon Romero, D-Fort Worth; Carl Tepper, R-Lubbock;
