Texas Broadcast Newsrooms Win National Murrow Awards
posted on 8.18.2025Five Texas broadcast newsrooms have won prestigious RTDNA National Murrow Awards.
KXAN-TV Austin, KUT-FM Austin, WFAA-TV Dallas-Fort Worth, Marfa Public Radio, and Texas Public Radio were cited by RTDNA for journalistic excellence this month.
KXAN’s A Hanging on Backbone Creek: Unraveling Texas' Antiquated Death Investigations, won in the Large Market Television category for Excellence in Innovation.
The KXAN Investigative team’s reporting shed light on the antiquated process still used in most Texas counties, of giving certain elected officials the power to determine cause and manner of death with scant training and often without autopsies or forensic expertise.
It caught the notice of state lawmakers who have filed bills to reform the problem by allowing smaller counties to band together to fund medical examiners for regions.
KUT-FM Austin won in the Large Market Radio division in the Hard News category for Austin Airport is Getting New Runway Safety Tech That Could Have Prevented Near-Miss.
KUT’s Nathan Bernier reported on the City of Austin’s efforts to improve airport safety after a near miss incident involving a Southwest Airlines jet on the ground and an inbound FedEx jet using the same runway at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
The story included dramatic audio from ABIA air traffic control and the two pilots involved when the two planes came within 150 feet of a catastrophic collision in heavy fog.
WFAA’s I Need a Last Line, won in the Large Market Television category for Excellence in Writing.
Reporter Jobin Panicker’s group of stories detailed the loss of a musically gifted foster daughter; the memorable 1994 Plano East-John Tyler high school football playoff game, and a near tragedy at a Frisco church school.
Texas Public Radio won in the Large Market Radio division in the Newscast category for its March 20, 2024 broadcast of Texas Public Radio's Morning Edition that explored a recently passed state immigration measure and its impact on Texas communities.
Marfa Public Radio’s reporting on the same law won in the Small Market Radio category for Hard News.
