State of the State Address Set for Feb. 16; Nexstar to Provide Feed to Texas Broadcasters

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will give his State of the State address at 7pm on Thursday, Feb. 16, in San Marcos at a chamber of commerce event.

The speech is traditionally used by Texas governors to set legislative priorities and outline key goals of the gubernatorial term.

It is also traditional for the speech to be given before a joint session of the Texas Legislature, but for the second time in his administration, Abbott will make the speech elsewhere other than the Capitol.

In 2021, citing Covid restrictions, Abbott chose to make his remarks from Visionary Fiber Technologies in Lockhart.

“This 88th Legislative Session is an opportunity for the Legislature and statewide leaders to transform the lives of Texans for generations and build an even brighter future for our state,” said Abbott in a statement.

“We have already accomplished so many great things for the people of Texas—working together, we will continue charting a course for the Texas of tomorrow.”

The speech will air live on 16 Nexstar television stations serving 14 Texas media markets.

Nexstar will make the live feed of the speech available to Texas broadcast stations.

TAB is emailing feed coordinate details and format information to Texas television and radio stations.

Nexstar said in addition to the detailing of legislative priorities and his key state initiatives, Abbott is expected to “highlight exceptional Texans from across the state.”

Abbott’s half-hour address will be followed by a ten-minute rebuttal by the Texas Democratic Party.

Nexstar said it will fill out the last 20 minutes of the hour-long feed with a round table discussion with members of the legislature and Nexstar journalists.

“We are grateful to Governor Abbott for giving Nexstar this opportunity,” said Andy Alford, President of Broadcasting for Nexstar Media Inc.

“Nexstar is committed to providing the communities we serve with news programming and analysis that informs and educates viewers about the important issues confronting local, state, and national government leaders.”
