TAB will present the annual Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Belo Center for New Media on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Sponsors of the event include the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters and the School of Journalism in the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin.

This all-day workshop features nationally-known broadcast newsroom trainers Al Tompkins of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, Deborah Potter of NewsLab and Les Rose of CBS News.

Texas broadcast news and media law professionals will also be on hand as session presenters.

The workshop will cover a wide gamut of topics for newsroom managers, reporters, producers and videojournalists:

  • critical thinking skills
  • use of social media in journalism
  • broadcast newswriting
  • compelling storytelling
  • effective interviewing techniques
  • tips for telling non-visual stories
  • ethical decision making in a social media world
  • newsroom legal issues
  • investigative journalism
  • developing and maintaining sources
  • verifying the facts in political claims
  • essentials of captivating video journalism

While the conference is geared to the working broadcast newsroom professional, two sessions for university student attendees will focus on entering the newsroom workforce in Texas.

Online registration opens Wednesday, Aug. 20.

The $55 registration fee for TAB member station staff includes a box lunch.

Students can attend the workshop for $25.

All registration fees increase $15 after Sunday, Sept. 7.
