FOIFT Hosts June 19 Open Government Seminar and First Amendment Institute

The Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, a longtime partner of TAB in the fight for Open Government at the Texas Legislature, is offering free Open Government and media rights training for journalists at a June 19 seminar in San Antonio.

The day-long event will be held at San Antonio College in the Loftin Student Center (Fiesta Room), 1300 San Pedro Ave, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.  The Journalism-Photography Program at San Antonio College is a co-sponsor of the workshop.

Justin Gordon, an attorney and Open Records Division Chief for the Texas Attorney General’s Office, will conduct the morning Open Government session which will focus on the Texas Public Information Act and its cost rules.  Tom Williams, an attorney with TAB Associate member law firm Haynes Boone, will conduct a midday session on the Texas Open Meetings Act.  Williams, a frequent speaker at TAB’s annual newsroom workshop, is an FOIFT board member.

The final session of the day is FOIFT’s First Amendment Institute, a journalist-focused presentation that will review current issues in media rights, libel and media law, as well as newsroom ethics. 

While the entire seminar is free, space is limited, so journalists are encourage to sign up as soon as possible.
