FCC cancels virtually all captioning waivers

The Federal Communications Commission on Friday revoked practically all of the waivers it ever issued to closed captioning requirements imposed by Congress in 1996.

The FCC indicated the entities seeking permission to broadcast programs without providing closed captioning will need to re-file requests by Jan. 18.

The order, however, indicated the FCC will be much stricter about allowing waivers.

Among the entities named Friday were 31 Texas churches that supply religious programming to local TV stations.
