Broadcasters Mourn Loss of Sammy Allred

Longtime Austin broadcaster Sammy Allred passed away on May 10. He was 84.

Allred and partner Dewayne Smith started the Geezinslaw Brothers band in the 1950s, making appearances on The Ed Sullivan and Jackie Gleason Shows, among others.

The group appeared on Austin City Limits several times and were inducted into the Austin Music Awards' Hall of Fame in 2005.

Allred worked in radio for more than 40 years, with the bulk of his broadcasting career at KVET and KOKE Austin.

He is a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame and won the Country Music Association Personality of the Year Award in 2006 and 2007.

A public memorial service for Allred is set for Friday, May 18 at 1 pm at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail in Austin. Visitation, also open to the public, will be 6-8 pm, May 17, at the same location.
