Broadcasters mourn Pioneer Stan McKenzie
posted on 7.05.2017South Texas Radio pioneer and longtime voice of the Southwest Conference Football Network, Stan McKenzie, passed away July 3 at the age of 89.
McKenzie dedicated his life to the people of Seguin where he managed KWED-AM from 1950 until he bought the station in 1970, the year he put the station’s new FM counterpart on the air.
For 29 years, he was the lead broadcaster for Humble Oil’s football radio broadcasts after being hired by Kern Tips in 1955.
While he retired from active management of KWED in 1985 and sold the station in 1987, he continued doing occasional editorializing into the mid-1990s.
Admired by his fellow broadcasters across the state, McKenzie served as TAB Board Chairman in 1974 and was named TAB’s Pioneer of the Year in 1984. An advocate for education, he served as chairman of the Broadcast Education Association and was active with the Texas Association of Broadcast Educators. He also served a term on the NAB Board of Directors.
A native of Miami in the Texas Panhandle, McKenzie attended what is now West Texas A&M University before transferring to the University of Texas at Austin and graduating in 1950 with a BFA degree in Radio Broadcasting.
He worked part-time in sports announcing at KVET in Austin and KTAE in Taylor while a UT student before joining KWED in Seguin.
McKenzie is survived by his wife, Emma Jean; children, Kaye Kaplan, Donna McKenzie and John McKenzie and several grandchildren.
