April 1 Deadline for TAB Leadership Awards Nominations

- NEW: Jason Hightower Awards for Broadcast Excellence

Texas Radio and TV broadcasters have until April 1 to submit nominations for the industry’s top honors in the Lone Star State which are slated to be presented at the TAB Show Aug. 3-4 in Austin. The awards include the inaugural Jason Hightower Awards for Broadcast Excellence honoring young professionals in Radio and TV, as well as the long-established Pioneer, Broadcaster and Associate of the Year awards.

The new honor is the third to be named after a Texas broadcaster, joining the George Marti Award for Engineering Excellence and Steve Pieringer Award for Outstanding Valor in News Coverage.

The Hightower Awards recognize individuals in Radio and Television with at least 10 years’ experience in the broadcast industry who demonstrate a proficiency for enterprise and innovation in a member station’s service to their audience, advertisers and community.

The top three nominees in each category will receive a complimentary registration to the Aug. 3-4 Convention and Awards Gala, along with two complimentary hotel room nights. The winners will be announced onsite.

These awards recognize broadcasters early in their careers, while the Pioneer, Broadcaster and Associate of the Year awards are widely seen as “career-capping” honors.

About Jason Hightower
Hightower was 27 years old when he and his wife Ingrid became owner/operators of KMOO-FM Mineola. He joined TAB immediately and quickly rose through the leadership ranks, ultimately serving as TAB Chairman in 2008. Jason passed away in March 2009 after battling brain cancer; he was just 37.

In 2009 his fellow broadcasters posthumously honored him as TAB Broadcaster of the Year, celebrating Jason’s strong commitment to locally-focused, community broadcasting, as well as his love for advancing the causes of Texas broadcasting (both Radio and TV) before lawmakers in Austin and Washington, DC.
