Nationally-recognized presenters Al Tompkins of the Poynter Institute and Deborah Potter, co-author of Advancing the Story, will conduct six sessions throughout the day.

Other panels will feature a wealth of talent from Texas broadcast newsrooms, many of whom are nominated for that night’s EMMY® awards gala.

Texas media law experts will also be on hand to provide legal information to help keep attendees out of court.

Session topics include:

  • re-establishing public trust through solid broadcast journalism
  • combatting the “fake news” label
  • key elements of memorable storytelling
  • digital storytelling best practices and strategies
  • sharpening broadcast newswriting skills
  • overcoming FOI roadblocks and difficult PIOs
  • avoiding hoaxes and false stories
  • law enforcement-related investigative reporting
  • local government-related investigative reporting
  • Texas’ newsgathering-related laws
  • watchdogging how taxpayer dollars are spent
