Southwest Broadcast Newsroom Workshop

 - Les Rose, Byron Pitts provide focus on storytelling

The all-day Saturday workshop is sponsored in part by the SMU Division of Journalism, the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences-Lone Star Chapter, SKY Helicopters and Vislink Broadcast.

The event will feature nearly 40 presenters including nationally-known newsroom trainers and some of the best broadcast news professionals in Texas.

Network news veterans Byron Pitts of ABC News and Les Rose of CBS News will present a feature session on storytelling, as well as individual sessions on reporting and videography.

Pitts joined ABC News this past April as an anchor and chief national correspondent. He previously reported for CBS News for more than 15 years as a national correspondent and contributor to the legendary 60 Minutes program.

Rose, along with CBS’ Steve Hartman, has produced some of the network’s most memorable stories for the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood and The Early Show.

Chip Mahaney, senior director of local operations TV for Scripps Digital, will present a session on the impact of technology on broadcast newsrooms and where it may take them by 2020.

He will also do a session on the use of Facebook to promote stories and on-air staff, as well as for newsgathering.

Greg Derkowski of 602 Communications will present two sessions on tease writing for news stories and newscasts.
