Live Debate: Lt. Gov

Houston Public Media and the Houston Chronicle, in partnership with the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB), will present a live, one-hour debate between the two Republican primary candidates for the Lieutenant Governor of Texas: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and State Senator Dan Patrick.

The debate will be broadcast live on television, radio and streamed online on Friday, May 2 at 7 pm.

Streaming and broadcast feed are available to all media outlets in Texas.

The runoff primary election will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

WHO: Candidates: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and State Sen. Dan Patrick.

MODERATOR: Craig Cohen (executive producer/host of Houston Matters on Houston Public Media News 88.7).

PANELISTS: Mary Benton (general assignments news reporter; KPRC-TV); Joe Holley (Native Texan columnist/editorial writer at the Houston Chronicle); and Aurora Losada (editor of La Voz de Houston/Houston Chronicle and LaVoztx.com).

WHEN: Fri., May 2 at 7:00 p.m. – "Texas Votes: The Dewhurst-Patrick Debate in the Republican Lieutenant Governor’s Race" will be televised live at 7 pm on TV 8 from the Houston Public Media studios, as well as simulcast on Houston Public Media News 88.7 FM and streamed live online at www.houstonpublicmedia.org/debate and www.chron.com/debate

WHERE: LeRoy & Lucile Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting (4343 Elgin Street, Houston, TX 77004)

HOW: Questions on selected topics will be presented by the panel of journalists in a response/rebuttal debate format. Each candidate will be asked a specific question on the topic and given 90 seconds to respond. The opposing candidate will then have 45 seconds to respond to the original candidate’s answer. Finally, the candidate who answered initially to the panelist’s question will have an additional 30 seconds for the final rebuttal. The debate will last 60 minutes. Each candidate will have a one-minute opening and a 90-second closing statement.
