Job Description

WFAA, TEGNA's ABC affiliate in Dallas, TX is seeking a Director of Production and Special Programs. The Director of Production and Special Programs must be a creative visionary who can champion production processes and practices ensuring the seamless execution and daily operation of WFAA’s programs including newscasts, Good Morning Texas, and other special programs. This role will oversee WFAA’s production staff of broadcast directors and studio crew. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding of broadcast production, exceptional organizational abilities, and the ability to drive high-quality content that resonates with audiences.

Leadership and Management:

•    Oversight, coaching, and mentoring production staff of broadcast directors and studio crew, as well as GMT team, producers, directors, photographer/editors and other staff.
•    Foster a collaborative and positive working environment, encouraging innovation and creative input from all team members.
•    Conduct regular team meetings to review progress, address challenges, and ensure alignment with the station’s vision and goals
•    Mentor to help provide guidance and support to team members, helping them develop their skills and advance in their careers.
•    Offer constructive feedback and performance reviews, identifying areas for improvement and opportunities for professional growth
•    Create and implement training programs or workshops to enhance the team's technical and creative abilities.
•    Manage the department’s budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources while maintaining production quality.

Executive Production:

•    Maintain quality control of production of WFAA broadcasts and special programs
•    Partner with cross-department teams on special programs and projects (remote broadcasts, community programs, etc.)
•    Oversee GMT content development and production working with staff to ensure content is compelling, relevant, and meets highest standards of quality and audience engagement
•    Collaborate with Sales Department to continually drive revenue growth and reach its annual budgets, specifically as it applies to Good Morning Texas.

Strategic Planning:

•    Stay abreast of industry trends, audience preferences, and competitive programming to keep WFAA production practices fresh and innovative
•    Develop and implement long-term strategies to enhance GMT’s format, and viewer appeal.
 
Requirements: 

•    Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications, Media Production, or a related field is preferred.
•    Minimum of 15+ years in broadcast production, with at least 7 years in a management or executive producer role.
•    Proven track record of successful show management and content creation in a live television environment.
•    Should have a solid understanding of on-air production techniques in the control room and studio, as well as in the field.
•    Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
•    Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills.
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
•    Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
•    Proficiency with broadcast production equipment and software.
•    Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
•    Passion for television production and storytelling.
•    Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
•    Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and viewer demands.
