Job Description

KBMT 12News is looking for a part-time Assignment Editor/Photographer. The ideal candidate will organize, coordinate and help drive the news operations at TEGNA's Southeast Texas station in Beaumont, Texas.

This person must be able to multi-task, skillfully using proprietary databases, government information systems, social media and digital tools to research and discover stories. This role requires exceptional organizing and planning skills.

The person in this role will be more than a traditional assignment editor. He or she will be expected to be a content creator – either directly (writing for our platforms or producing streaming media) or in a supporting role by helping execute the vision of newsroom producers and editors.

The role requires a focus on news gathering and multi-platform storytelling -- broadcast, online and social content.

Responsibilities: 

•    Aggressively confirm information about breaking news and dispatch crews with urgency
•    Publish content to website and social media accounts.
•    Enterprise news stories
•    Assemble daily news plans, including reporter/photographer assignments using ENPS
•    Work closely with newsroom leadership to plan appropriate staffing for daily and future news gathering
•    Proactively vet incoming news tips and coordinate story gathering
•    Develop and maintain lists of contacts at public agencies, major businesses, nonprofit organizations and other influential entities and individuals.
•    Monitor law enforcement and emergency responder scanner traffic to alert the newsroom to breaking news.
•    Monitor digital chatter and real-time tools to alert the newsroom to content opportunities.
•    Represent 12News in conversations with other media organizations about pool coverage and access issues.
•    Coordinate sharing of resources with other stations in the TEGNA group
•    Be curious about new technologies and tools that could improve the assignment process.

Requirements:

•    Understanding the tenants of professional journalism
•    Organizational skills and the ability to work under constant time pressure deadlines
•    Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
•    Experience with content management systems
•    Knowledge of Google Analytics, Sharablee, Edius or ENPS a plus
•    Strong social media skills, including an active news hound presence on Twitter and Facebook
•    Basic image and video editing skills preferred
•    Knowledge of the AP Stylebook preferred
•    Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekend, night and holiday shifts
•    Familiarity with Southeast Texas area will make your application stand out.
