CLASSIFICATION: Full-time, exempt

SUMMARY: Texas Public Radio (TPR) is a mission-driven, award-winning, multimedia organization serving an audience of hundreds of thousands through seven radio stations across a wide swath of Texas. TPR produces and delivers top-quality content via radio broadcast, video and audio streaming, digital networks and live events, and works collaboratively with other media organizations to produce and provide even richer content and programming.

We are seeking an experienced Operations Support Engineer to participate in the installation, maintenance and repair of our growing facilities in order to maintain superior service in all coverage areas, while complying with FCC technical requirements.

The Broadcast Operation Engineer also will assist with technical support and maintenance of our studio systems in use within the organization and assist with the oversight of building operations at our headquarters facility. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, resourceful, self-starter, with strong time management and critical thinking skills.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary contact for operational issues and support (facilities systems HVAC, Security, mechanical).

Primary contact for event technology including sound, lighting and installed building systems.

Build effective relationships with news team, events and broadcast staff to improve technology use and effectiveness.

Act as Chief Operator and maintain EAS Logs.

Coordinate automation streams for hand off to STL or streaming.

Coordinate automation system to ensure continuity of broadcast, clocks, templates and closures.

Maintain Program clocks for local and externally produced programs.

Assist with keeping on air sound in compliance with NPR programming rules and formats.

Assist in traffic and act as backup.

Maintain automation system through periodic maintenance, backups and weekly checks.

Assist with studio and rack room buildouts, changes and maintenance.

Assist with network IT, Telco systems.

Assist with transmitter site maintenance.  

Intake, document, and escalate incidents as needed.

Train and instruct employees on proper equipment usages.

Train new board ops as needed for on air duties.

Backup board op if needed for local or visiting national NPR shows.

Assists with ip-codec equipment to connect guests on air.

Quickly and effectively troubleshoot problems.

Support events and broadcasts with technical knowledge and guidance.

Monitor broadcasts for quality and issues when necessary.

24/7 on call for emergencies.

Update wiring, labeling and documentation to current plan.

Protect the station’s broadcasting licenses and prevent institutional liability by ensuring compliance with FCC Rules and Regulations.

Participate appropriately in station fundraising, sponsorship activities and live events.

Fulfill administrative obligations related to required documentation, keeping appropriate files and submitting timely expense reports.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Self-motivated, with a "willing spirit" and the ability to work efficiently with limited direct supervision.
Demonstrated professionalism and personal relationship skills, including the ability to work well with other team members. Exceptional organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.  Ability to work after hours as needed, sometimes on short notice and be on-call 24/7 for emergencies or scheduled maintenance.  Must have a valid standard Class C driver's license, transportation and the ability to travel on short notice.

EDUCATION: Associate degree in electronics technology or related field, or equivalent experience in operations or maintenance at a broadcast station. SBE Certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years technical experience working at a broadcast station.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS:
Familiarity with digital audio storage systems, automation systems and traffic systems. Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, telecommunication laws related to broadcast station operation and compliance.
IT skills, including workstation and server troubleshooting and repair, local area networking and desktop support.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Finger Dexterity: Using fingers to make small movements such as typing or picking up small objects or hand tools.
Talking: Verbally conveying information, instructions, and ideas clearly and quickly.
Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations, in person or by phone.
Repetitive Motions: Frequently and regularly using the wrists, hands and fingers.
Visual: Average, ordinary, visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect printed materials. Must be able to differentiate color coding of wiring and components.
Physical: Ability to travel. Must have the ability to lift 75 lbs., climb ladders and use common power tools.
