Title: Measurement and Management of Loudness and Audio Quality
Presenter: Dr. Richard C. Cabot, Qualis Audio
Description: The variations in loudness experienced by viewers have become a heated topic in recent years, culminating in the CALM Act.
In addition to the Act’s legal strictures, viewer satisfaction necessitates attention to more than just surround loudness.
Discussion will also cover several technical and practical audio quality management issues which have had very limited attention.
These include:
- the differences between assessing the same content in surround vs. downmixed stereo reproduction
- intelligibility of dialogue (particularly in live sporting event production)
- and the effects of processing on signal loudness and reproduction quality.
Technology will be described for unattended monitoring, logging and alarming of these and other potential audio quality issues.
